I think we have to start looking at how we provide healthcare differently, by using different people in different roles. The shortage of GPs means Practice Nurses do more, and hence care assistants do more. We need to utilise pharmacists and other healthcare professionals to take on roles that are appropriate. We also need to educate the public about using services appropriately – A&E is not for minor illness, nor is the GP there for colds or basic first aid. I don’t think we are always very good at encouraging people to self manage problems as much either.
