• Question: what was your motivation to study when studying for medicine?

      I’d always been good at and enjoyed science, but as I did work experience in year 10 I realised that I wanted to do a job that involved working with people because I really enjoyed talking to them and helping them. I thought I might want to be a science teacher so I had a chat with my biology teacher at school and she suggested that she thought I would make a good doctor and that I do some work experience to see. I really enjoyed the work experience – I loved the ability to use my knowledge and skills to be able to help people, and the rest is history I guess!

      I always enjoyed biology and learning about how the body works. I really wanted to do something that made a difference to peoples lives. I think I quite surprised myself by studying nursing – I know my dad never thought I would stick it out. A lot of my course was shared with students doing Nutrition, Pharmacology and Biochemistry, so some subjects were really hard going, but overall I just enjoyed learning new things.

      I honestly wouldn’t know what I would do if I wasn’t a doctor! There really isn’t any job that could give me the same satisfaction as being a GP! No other job, even in medicine, gives you such variety of people and problems and the chance to make a real difference to someone’s life every 10 minutes! When I was at medical school, it sometimes was really hard to keep going because there is so much to learn and so many tough exams. However, I really never changed my mind about being a doctor and the thought of being able to help so many people helped me push forward and get back to that library to do some more study!

      I enjoyed psychiatric nursing, finding out about what makes people tick and its very much the mystery of how does a bunch of chemical reactions turn into thoughts and feelings
